Science Café kicks off Fall 2018 with Dr. Scott Moody discussing “Athens, OH, 240 Years Ago: A Natural History” on Wednesday, Sept. 19, at 5 p.m. in the Front Room at Baker University Center.
Moody is Professor Emeritus of Biological Sciences at Ohio University.

Following the settlement of the Revolutionary War with the British in 1783 and the founding of the Northwest Territory (Ordinance of 1787), large numbers of European Americans migrated west from the eastern colonies. Many were veterans of the Revolutionary War and had been given land grants for tracts along the Ohio, Muskingum and Hocking Rivers.
At that time, the forests, rivers and tall-grass prairies were remarkably different and wild, with large mammal carnivores as well as large herbivorous prey that no longer live in Ohio.
Moody will take the audience back to that period of time, representing what the pioneer founders—notably Cutler, Ewing, Nye and Putnam—would have experienced at the founding of Ohio University.
Moody also will discuss the current status of reintroducing once extirpated amphibian, reptilian and mammal species, as well as recreating and protecting appropriate natural ecological habitats of the state and federal forests and riverine tall-grass prairies. A selection of preserved specimens from the Ohio University Zoology Museum will be on display.
Science Café events are held on Wednesdays at 5 p.m. in the Front Room at Baker University Center. They are free and open to students, faculty and staff. Science Café is a venue for students to share their interests informally during a conversation exchange in a friendly setting.
