Flu season means vaccination time. Last year was a high-severity flu season, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Overall hospitalization rates were among the highest ever recorded, with 180 confirmed pediatric deaths from influenza. Approximately 80 percent of those deaths occurred in children who had not received a flu vaccination.
Widespread reports in the media suggesting that the influenza vaccine was not effective against last year’s flu is reigniting decades-old controversies regarding vaccines, vaccine hesitancy and vaccine denial.

At his Science Café presentation, Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences Carroll discusses these issues and answers some common questions about vaccines. What are the facts? Where does the vaccine controversy come from? Should you get vaccinated this year? According to Carroll and the CDC, the answer is definitely “yes.”
Science Café events are held on Wednesdays at 5 p.m. in the Front Room at Baker University Center. They are free and open to students, faculty and staff. Science Café is a venue for students to share their interests informally during a conversation exchange in a friendly setting.
The Science Café is hosted by Dr. Sarah Wyatt, Professor of Environmental & Plant Biology and Vice President of the Ohio University Chapter of Sigma Xi, and Roxanne Malé-Brune, Director of Grant Development and Projects in the Office of the Vice President for Research and Creativity.
