Dear Friends,

This is an exciting time in the English Department as so many good things are happening. We have been enjoying our temporary home in Lindley Hall while Ellis Hall is undergoing a complete renovation. We will be returning to Ellis during winter break 2018, but we’re inviting you for a sneak peek during Homecoming 2018. The ribbon-cutting will happen in January.

This past year we honored two Notable Alumni honorees, Taylor Hagood and Rachael Peckham, at the College of Arts and Sciences Notable Alumni Awards Ceremony. We also welcomed four new full-time faculty: Edmond Chang, Rachael Ryerson, Paul Shovlin, and Bianca Spriggs.

The department continues to host four literary journals: Brevity, New Ohio Review, Quarter After Eight, and Sphere; our graduate and undergraduate students play key roles in each of these magazines. In April 2018 we celebrated the 33rd Spring Literary Festival, and plans are currently underway for the 2019 Spring Literary Festival. Our graduates continue to impress us with their many accomplishments from their interesting careers to their prestigious awards.

We have especially enjoyed the opportunity to have alumni return to campus and meet with our current students and share how they leveraged their English degree for professional success. The College of Arts & Sciences hosted its second Student-Alumni Networking event this past January, and it was such a success that we are repeating the event again in January 2019. The event provided a wonderful way for the department to reconnect with alumni and also for alumni to share their expertise with current students.

I hope you enjoy reading through this newsletter to catch a glimpse of some of the great things going on in the department, and I hope you’ll also plan to come back and see us. Homecoming is Saturday, Oct. 20, 2018, and we welcome you to join us at the College of Arts & Sciences tent at Tailgreat Park that day and for an insider’s tour of the new Ellis Hall. Also, mark your calendar for the Student-Alumni Networking Reception, Jan. 31, 2019.

Warm regards,

Linda J. Rice, Professor and Chair
