The Global Solidarities Lecture Series presents a Critical Kashmir Studies Panel on “Resisting Occupation in Kashmir” on Thursday, Nov. 29, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in Scripps 111.

This panel launches the publication of Resisting Occupation in Kashmir (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2018).

The panelists will discuss the shifting registers of occupation and resistance that have shaped the everyday lives of people and communities in Kashmir Valley.

The panel features Dr. Mona Bhan, Associate Professor of Anthropology at DePauw University; Dr. Ather Zia, Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Gender Studies at Northern Colorado University; and Dr. Haley Duschinski,  Associate Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Center for Law, Justice & Culture at Ohio University.

The panel addresses the social and legal logic of India’s occupation of Kashmir in relation to colonialism, militarization, power, democracy, and sovereignty.

It foregrounds the intensification of state violence and repression since 2016, which has transformed the nature of resistance in Kashmir and strengthened global civil society initiatives that challenge India’s illegal occupation of Kashmir. The discussion also addresses the implications of the 2018 United Nations report on the human rights situation in Kashmir.

The Global Solidarities Lecture Series is organized by Cutler Scholars in partnership with the Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies and the Middle East & North Africa Studies at Ohio University. Co-sponsors include the OHIO War & Peace Studies Program, the Center for Law, Justice, and Culture, the Institute for Applied and Professional Ethics, the LGBTQ Center, and the Geography Department.
