Letter from the Director

Dear Students,

Welcome to summer classes! I am sure by now you have noticed the campus is much quieter than it was a few weeks ago. How do you like it? Too quiet? Not for me. I enjoy this time of year. I like the warm weather, and I like not having to wait in line at the restaurants and coffee shops.

One thing you might have noticed is that the classrooms can be cold sometimes. This is due to the air-conditioning being centrally controlled across the campus. Some buildings are cooler than others. My solution is to always have a light sweater or jacket with me. That way, I can put it on if it is chilly inside the building.

I hope you take advantage of some of the special events that happen in Athens during the summer. For example, this Saturday, May 19, there will be three events. The first is a “Cruise-in at the Convo” from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be a display of old, classic automobiles for you to see outside the Convocation Center. Ask your teachers what “cruise-in” means. At the Athena Cinema movie theater, there will be a comedy “Coming to America” at 7 p.m. Later that evening, from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m., you can attended the Observatory Tour on the College Green. There will be a telescope set up for you to look at planets and stars. Hopefully it won’t be cloudy!

And of course, don’t forget the Athens Farmers’ Market that is open every Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. The address is 1000 E. State St.; the market is in the parking lot outside the mall called “The Market on State.” Just look for all the white tents and all the people buying fresh vegetables and fruit. You can take the number 2 or 3 bus there from Baker Center. Just show your student I.D. and the ride is free.

To keep up with events in Athens, this summer, check the OHIO calendar of events.

Also, remember if you are looking for a place to escape the summer heat, go to Alden library. You can keep cool and do your homework at the same time!

Have a great summer.

Dr. Krzic

International Conversation Hour

Dates: June 5, 12 and 19 at Jefferson 160 from 6-7 p.m.

This is an opportunity for OPIE students to meet with other people from Ohio University and practice their English skills in an informal and fun atmosphere. It is an excellent opportunity to make friends with American students.
