Dr. Kenneth Hicks, Professor of Physics & Astronomy, wrote an article headlined “Astronomy: Helping us understand universe one of Stephen Hawking’s gifts” in the April 1 Columbus Dispatch.

In mid-March, famed theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking died. He had some stunning professional achievements in his career, and also had a lifelong interest in sharing his vision and understanding of the cosmos with the general public.

Hawking is perhaps best known among the public for his book “A Brief History of Time,” which was published in 1988 and was a best-seller for many years. For those who haven’t read the book, it starts off with stories of creation by different cultures, showing that humans have a natural curiosity about who we are and how we came to be. Whether one prefers a religious explanation or a scientific one (or a mixture of both), the point is that we have a desire to know about our origins.
