Biology in Your World | Poisons in Plain Sight, March 24

The Biological Sciences Graduate Society has coordinated a series of biology talks for the public at the Athens Public Library. The “Biology in Your World” series if free and open to the public.

Poisons in Plain Sight

Saturday, March 24 @ 2 p.m.

Have you ever been told to keep poinsettias away from pets? Or to be careful where you plant that lovely oleander shrub you just bought?

In this talk, we’ll explore the toxins found in many common plants, which groups (children, pets, etc.) are most susceptible, how the poisons enter the body and some of the common symptoms, and non-toxic alternatives for our gardens.

Roads & Box Turtles

Saturday, April 21 @ 2 p.m.

Roadways are the single largest man-made structure in the United States, and they have many effects on wildlife. Turtles are greatly impacted because they are slow and often use roadway habitats.

This program will share research findings on how a new roadway in the Nelsonville, Ohio, area affects Eastern Box Turtles.
