Alumni News | Biology’s Robert Kromer Passes Away at Age 90

Ohio University alum Dr. Robert Kromer ’48, who earned a B.A. in Biology Pre-Medicine from the College of Arts & Sciences, passed away, reports the Sandusky Register. He was also a Trustee Emeriti of the Ohio University Foundation Board.

Dr. Robert Kromer, 90, formerly of Sandusky and residing in Jacksonville, Fla., passed away Monday morning, Jan. 22, 2018, at St. Vincent Medical Center in Jacksonville.

Robert was born on June 21, 1927, in Kimball, Ohio, to Leonard A. and Cecelia (Good) Kromer.

Robert was a 1945 graduate of Margaretta High School and received his B.A. from Ohio University in 1948. He received his D.O. from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1952. Robert practiced general osteopathic medicine in Sandusky starting in 1953, until his retirement in 1993. He was associated with the former Sandusky Memorial Hospital, then, later the Firelands Community Hospital until his retirement. Robert was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He was actively involved on many levels with multiple professional and service organizations at the local, state and national levels. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during World War II. In his spare time, he enjoyed traveling, Toft’s Ice Cream and spending time with his family and friends.

Robert is survived by three daughters, Kathryn (Gene) Goff of Sandusky, Susan (Deb Wright) Kromer of Honolulu, and Wendy (Scott) Schell of Sandusky; sons, Thomas (Dana) of Dublin, Ohio, Stephen (Deb Hibjan) of Seven Hills, Ohio, and James (Mary Jo) Kromer of Sandusky; ten grandchildren, Lezlie, Vincent, Joseph, Tim, Audrey, Mitchel, Robert, Francis, Maureen and Mary; his longtime companion, Martha Ann Yost; sisters, Sister Mary Mona Kromer of Whitehouse, Ohio and Carol Kromer of Sandusky; brother, Charles (Kathy) Kromer of Dayton and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Joan A. (Avery) Kromer in 1996; sisters, Marjorie Bauer, Shirley Brown, Ramona Kromer and Evelyn Zeller and brothers, Oliver, Johnny, Gilbert and Russell Kromer.

Friends may call 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. The Knights of Columbus Assembly #813 Honor Guard will stand guard from 4: p.m. until the time of Chalice Presentation at 4:45 p.m. Prayers will be recited in the funeral home 9:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 29 followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 429 Central Ave., Sandusky. The Rev. Phil Feltman will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Sandusky.
