Overall is an Associate Professor of Psychology at The University of Auckland. The primary goal of her research is to investigate how emotional, attachment and relationship difficulties can be overcome to build healthy relationships. This involves investigating how couples can effectively resolve conflict and support each other, and the factors that influence these important relationship processes, such as biased perceptions, depressive symptoms, attachment insecurity, power and sexist attitudes. She also investigates the factors that can overcome the dysfunctional patterns that can arise from attachment insecurity, perceptual biases, and poor emotional regulation.

Overall’s primary methodological aim is to assess people’s relationship perceptions and behavior as they matter in real-life, including the way in which naturally-occurring relationship processes shape the course of people’s lives and their relationships. To achieve this, she combines social interaction and daily diaries, behavioral observation, and longitudinal designs to model the predictors and consequences of emotions, perceptions and behavior within daily life, during actual interactions, and across time. She also focuses on modelling dyadic processes to show that the ways in which people’s perceptions, emotions and behavior impact health and well-being depend on how those responses differentially influence both couple members.
