As part of its efforts to compliment in-class education and serve as a resource to the Ohio University community, the History Department is pleased to present the following events during the Fall 2017 term.
Sept. 13, 6:30 p.m. (Seigfred Hall 401)
Screening of the film Men in the Arena (Somalia)
Directed by J. R. Biersmith (2017), this documentary highlights the stories of Saadiq Mohammed and Sa’ad Xussien, as they come of age in Somalia. For these men, soccer is their passion, profession, and the only pathway they seem to find for a more hopeful future. The event will feature introductory comments by Dr. Steve Howard, who will also moderate the brief Q&A after the screening. This screening represents the Somalia installment of the 2017-18 Banned Countries Film Series. Lecture by Neilesh Bose on “History, Memory, and Myth: How We Have Come to Understand the End of WWII in India”
Dr. Neilesh Bose, Assistant Professor of History at the University of Victoria, will give a lecture on the experience and memory of Indian participation in World War II. This event is co-sponsored by the History Department and the Contemporary History Institute.

Screening of the film The Devil Came on Horseback (Sudan)
Directed by Ricki Stern and Anne Sundberg (2007), this award-winning documentary explores the conflict in Darfu, Sudan. The event will feature introductory comments by Dr. Steve Howard, who will also moderate the brief Q&A after the screening. This screening represents the Sudan installment of the 2017-18 Banned Countries Film Series. Screening of the film A Separation (Iran)
Directed by Asghar Farhadi (2011), this award-winning feature film narrates the story of married couple and their struggles. It explores notions of intimacy, politics, and public space in the context of contemporary Iran. The event will feature introductory comments by Dr. Loren Lybarger, who will also moderate the brief Q&A after the screening. This film is screened as the Iran installment of the 2017-18 Banned Countries Film Series. Lecture by H.W. Brands on “From George Washington to Donald Trump: The Four Ages of the Presidency”
Dr. H.W. Brands, Professor and Jack S. Blanton Sr. Chair of History at the University of Texas at Austin, will give a lecture on the changing nature of the U.S. presidency since the founding of the country. Lecture by Steve Miner on “The Furies Unleashed: The Soviet Peoples at War, 1941-1945”
Dr. Steve Miner, Professor of History at Ohio University, will give a lecture based on his forthcoming book that addresses the experience of the Soviet Union during World War II. This event is co-sponsored by the Contemporary History Institute and History Department, as part of the latter’s faculty book talk series.
