Dr. Robert Briscoe, Professor of Philosophy at Ohio University, was awarded a Fulbright-Scotland Visiting Professorship from the US-UK Fulbright Commission.

Briscoe’s award will enable him to conduct research at the University of Glasgow through one of the most well-regarded scholarship programs in the world. His project as Fulbright-Scotland Visiting Professor at the Centre for the Study of Perceptual Experience at the University of Glasgow is titled “Pictorial Experience in the Light of Vision Science.”

“Fulbright is an internationally recognized program that has the ability to change lives and impact the world,” said Ohio University President M. Duane Nellis. “Dr. Briscoe’s dedication to his craft and commitment to academic excellence at OHIO make him the perfect selection for this prestigious award.”

As a participant, Briscoe has been selected from a strong applicant pool to engage in an interdisciplinary project on depiction and the nature of pictorial experience at the University of Glasgow’s Centre for the Study of Perceptual Experience.

“It’s an honor to have received this grant from the US-UK Fulbright Commission,” Briscoe said, “and I very much look forward to working with the many outstanding philosophers based at the University of Glasgow. I and my family are thrilled to be spending my sabbatical year in a city as culturally rich as Glasgow, and we plan to travel extensively in other parts of Scotland and the UK.”

“The Fulbright Award provides evidence for the importance of Professor Briscoe’s scholarly work and allows for the expansion of its impact internationally,” said Dr. Robert Frank, Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences.  In addition to the broader benefits within the field of philosophy, the award will benefit Dr. Briscoe, the University of Glasgow and Ohio University faculty and students for years to come.”

Penny Egan CBE, Executive Director, US-UK Fulbright Commission said, “The impact of the Fulbright program can change the world. Our Fulbrighters will return to the U.S. having been exposed to different cultures, value systems and schools of thought. They will have the capacity to be more empathetic global citizens and be better prepared for collaboration across borders, between the U.S. and the UK, and beyond.”

Amy Moore, Director of the Fulbright Awards Programme, added, “No greater example of the continued importance of international education can be found than in the determination and drive of our 2017-18 grantees. These students, academics and professionals have identified the relevance of intercultural cooperation to their careers. As Fulbright alumni and future leaders, they will be able to foster personal and professional connections between nations.”
