Two Ohio University pre-law students served as mentors to the 18 high school students attending the Summer Law & Trial Institute, an immersive residential experience—including a mock trial—that directly addresses the complex legal challenges associated with social and economic inequality in Appalachian Ohio.

Casey Tisdale and Gabrielle Tharp served as the institute’s program assistants. The interns proved invaluable in assisting Ohio University alum Larry Hayman, (B.A. ’03) with the program’s day-to-day functions.

Tisdale, who is entering her final semester at OHIO, is majoring in Criminology and Psychology, with a minor in French. She is also earning a Certificate in Law, Justice & Culture. Tharp is double-majoring in Political Science and History with a minor in World Religions.

Tisdale also worked with Hayman as the Center for Law, Justice & Culture’s Pre-Law Associate. Part of her duties included helping to put together this year’s institute.

She applied for this position for many reasons, including her love of mock trials. More than that, though, Tisdale notes that she appreciates the opportunity to mentor inquisitive young students.

“I love serving as a mentor,” she notes. “My job is to answer questions about the case they have been assigned for their mock trial, as well as how to phrase objections and how to conduct themselves in a courtroom.”

Tisdale adds that the chance to expose Appalachian students to the wide world of law and academia is truly rewarding.

“At SLTI, we can start opening the students’ minds. This is a great program,” Tisdale adds.
