Robert Bozick ’99 is a Senior Sociologist at the RAND Corporation. RAND is a non-partisan public policy think tank located in Santa Monica, California.

After graduating with B.A. in Sociology and minor in Psychology from the College of Arts and Sciences at Ohio University, Bozick earned his M.A. in Sociology from the University of Maryland-College Park in 2001 and Ph.D. in Sociology from The Johns Hopkins University in 2005.

A Sociologist?

“I studied sociology as an undergraduate, and through an independent study I had with Dr. Christine Mattley (who I believe is still at OHIO!) I gained a deeper understanding of social inequalities and research methods used to study them,” Bozick explains. “Those early experiences with Dr. Mattley and the rest of courses I had in the sociology department inspired me to pursue a career in applied sociology.”

At RAND he researches ways to help disadvantaged populations get the training and skills they need to find stable employment and support their families. Part of the mission of RAND is to inform policy makers, and so he gets many opportunities to present his research to policy makers and other decision makers.

The Best Part

“This is the most fulfilling part of my job – doing research that can directly affect policy, which in turn has the potential to improve the lives of those in need,” Bozick says.

“I am currently working on a project that is trying to improve strategies for job training in the oil and natural gas industry in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. As you probably know, this is a growing industry that is starting to positively affect rural regions, including communities close to Athens.”
