Dr. Ziad Abu-Rish, Assistant Professor of History, published an article on “Municipal Politics in Lebanon” in the Fall 2016 issue of Middle East Report.

The article draws on Abu-Rish’s current book project analyzing the history of struggles over institutional arrangement—struggles that helped shape Lebanon’s post-independence political economy. In the article, Abu-Rish traces the history of the municipal system in Lebanon from the late Ottoman period through the most recent round of municipal elections. In doing so, he highlights the ways in which such history intersected with that of state building, economic development, and social mobilization. The article ends by taking stock of the 2016 municipal elections and how the politics surrounding them shed light on elite and popular struggles over institutions, resources, and visions of Lebanon.
