“Our product and design teams love research, and we’re thoroughly embedded in the teams with whom we work.

“We work collaboratively, and we take amazing and impactful trips around the world, where we get to experience our product – including its pain points – in our global markets.”

Susan Portalupi earned an HTC Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with a minor in Psychology from Ohio University in 2008 before graduating with a Master of Science in Evidence-Based Intervention from The University of Oxford in 2011.

Since graduating from Ohio University, Susan has lived and worked in England, Germany and France. She’s currently based in San Francisco, where she manages the International Growth research team at Uber.

Her team supports product and design in some of Uber’s biggest global markets – China, India and Southeast Asia.

She is responsible for informing and supporting the International Growth team’s product strategy and roadmap with exploratory, evaluative and quantitative research.

Working on Complex Problems Across Diverse Markets

Susan’s team works on complex problems, solving for challenges such as poor network connections, unique and dynamic infrastructure, and localization.

“It’s our job to represent the voice of our users across extremely diverse markets.

“We may be responsible for providing insights about riders’ pick-up experiences in Bangalore, India in one meeting, followed by a deep-dive into driver partners’ onboarding in Jakarta, Indonesia in the next.

“The variety and breadth keeps me on my toes and it’s always exciting to find out which countries we’ll be researching next.”
