Sociology Alumnus Enjoys Work with Doctors and Scientists

Will Wemer

After Will Wemer graduated with a B.A. in Sociology and B.S.J. in Magazine Journalism in 2008 from Ohio University, he went on to earn his M.A. in Communication Management in 2010 at Emerson College, where his research focused on online communication and health advocacy.

Grant Proposals and New Discoveries in Science and Medicine

“I work with faculty researchers by writing and developing grant proposals that are reviewed by major national foundations.

“This requires me to stay abreast of new discoveries in science and medicine, which can be quite challenging at times because technologies and treatments are advancing at an increasingly rapid pace.”

A Normal Day?

He is now the Associate Director of Foundation Relations at Brown University, where he works with faculty in the Warren Alpert Medical School, the Brown Institute for Brain Science, and seven life sciences departments.

“I get to work with talented doctors and scientists who are making incredible strides in the quest to eradicate diseases and improve health care for all people.

“There is no such thing as a normal day for me, as in a single week alone, I find myself working with biologists seeking a cure for ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), medical students volunteering in free clinics, or doctors seeking to improve the patient experience.

“Luckily, [the Department of Sociology and Anthropology] did an excellent job preparing me to gather and synthesize copious amounts of data on numerous topics in a methodical and accurate manner.”
