The Astrophysical Institute (ApI) presents Ohio University Alumnus and Professor, Steve Weppner of  the Eckerd College presenting “A Variable Polytrope Index Applied to Planet and Solar Models” on Wednesday, Jan. 13, at at 4:10 p.m. in Finlay Conference Room Edwards Accelerator Lab.

Abstract: I will introduce a new approach to the century-old polytrope method. I will show that the polytropic index is the derivative of the bulk modulus with respect to pressure. Augmenting the traditional polytrope theory by including a variable polytrope index within the confines of the traditional Lane–Emden differential equation that Eddington and Chandrasekhar used, mass–radius relationships and plausible density–radius models for the rocky planets of our Solar system will be detailed. I will also argue that the bulk modulus and its derivatives have been underutilized in previous planet and solar formation methods.
