Legal Activism Film Series Starts with Iron Jawed Angels, Nov. 3

Students for Law, Justice & Culture is hosting a film series as a part of the Center for Law, Justice & Culture‘s series: Critical Resistance through Legal Activism.

law center logoThe four films selected each tell stories of activism in the United States on issues of women’s suffrage, privacy, civil rights, and gay marriage.

The films will be screened in Ellis 112. All screenings will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Iron Jawed Angels depicts the brave young female activism who fought to secure the passage of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote in the United States.

We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks documents the creation of WikiLeaks by founder Julian Assange. The website was the vehicle behind one of the largest release of government secrets in U.S. history—a breach that was the jumping-off point for legislative and popular discussions about the privacy rights of American citizens.

Selma, which was nominated for Best Picture, tells the phenomenal story of Martin Luther King Jr. and civil rights activists who protested the lack of equality with a marathon civil rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama in 1965.

The Case Against 8 filmThe Case Against 8

Wednesday Nov. 18

The Case Against 8 tells the story of the struggle to overturn California’s gay marriage ban, a fight that ultimately led to a Supreme Court decision in favor of gay marriage earlier this year.
