The Ohio University’s Constitution Day 2015 lecture features R. Marc Kantrowitz discussing “Final But Not Infallible: Supreme Court Cases That Have Withstood the Test of Time” on Thursday, Sept. 17, at 5 p.m. in Baker Theater.

This Constitution Day lecture addresses U.S. Supreme Court rulings that, with the passage of time, have resulted in the shaking of one’s head and the exclamation, “What were they thinking?” Justice Kantrowitz considers cases involving slavery, interracial marriage, segregation, labor conditions, sex and sexuality.

Kantrowitz, who earned a B.A. degree in History in 1972 and an M.A. degree in Political Science in 1974 from the College of Arts & Sciences at Ohio University, is a Glidden Visiting Professor for the fall 2015 semester. He is lecturing and teaching during his time on campus.

Until August of this year, Kantrowitz was an  Associate Justice of the Massachusetts Appeals Court, where he wrote nearly a thousand opinions. Prior to that he served as an assistant district attorney, private attorney and juvenile court judge. He tried scores of cases and represented two dozen defendants charged with first degree murder.

While at Ohio University, Kantrowitz is teaching HIST 3070: Famous Trials in American History, based on his book, Old Whiskey and Young Women: American True Crime: Tales of Murder, Sex and Scandal, scheduled for publication in October.

This Constitution Day lecture is sponsored by the Center for Law, Justice & Culture, the departments of History and Political Science, and the Making and Breaking the Law Theme.
