Geology Alumni to Gather for 2015 Alumni Symposium

Geological Sciences alumni are invited to return to campus April 23-25 to interact with students and faculty and attend informal talks and discussions.

The 2015 Ohio University Geological Sciences Alumni Symposium is April 23 to April 25, and all alumni are welcome. Attendees will provide resumé and informal discussion help for students and receive updates on the department and the future of its endowments.

Alumni, faculty and students can sign up to talk about career themes over lunch. Topical dinner locations also are planned.

Keynote: From Athens to Austin: Field Experiences as a Geoscientist

Ohio University alum Dr. Michael Young ’85M gives the keynote address on “From Athens to Austin: Field Experiences as a Geoscientist” on Saturday, April 25, at 10 a.m. in Walter 145.

Young is Associate Director for Environment and Senior Research Scientist at the University of Texas at Austin. He has nearly 30 years of experience in subsurface flow and transport in both unsaturated and saturated media, contaminant hydrology, energy and water mass balance, energy/water nexus.

Young has authored or co-authored over 60 peer-reviewed journal articles, several book chapters, more than 100 presentations at scholarly meetings and many other technical reports. He currently serves as Editor of the Vadose Zone Journal, one of the leading journals on soil physics and vadose zone processes, and he is a member of numerous other committees in scholarly organizations that include the American Geophysical Union and Geological Society of America.

Young earned an M.S. in Geological Sciences (hydrogeology) from Ohio University and a Ph.D. from the University of Arizona. He did his undergraduate work at Hartwick College.
