The Physics & Astronomy Colloquium Series presents Hermann Riecke of Northwestern University on “Neuronal Networks in Sensory Processing in the Brain” on Friday, Jan. 23, at 4:10 p.m. in Walter 245.

Abstract: An essential function of the brain is to extract from the animal’s sensory input the information that is relevant for the animal’s survival. I will discuss two approaches that we have pursued to address sensory processing. Through detailed biophysical modeling of a specific neuron type in the retina we have identified the origin of a retinal dysfunction that arises as a consequence of the degeneration of photoreceptors. In the olfactory system we focus on the ability of networks to learn by rewiring and neuronal turn‐over. Through feedback from cortical areas this learning allows olfactory processing to depend on non-olfactory context.
