Alum Discusses French Studies at American Public Universities

Ohio University alum Jennifer Howell ’00, Assistant Professor of French at Illinois State University, presents “The Musings of a Francophoniste: Reevaluating French and Francophone Studies at American Public Universities,” reports Illinois State Media Relations.

She earned a B.S. in Biological Sciences and a B.A. in French from the College of Arts & Sciences at Ohio University.

In her talk, Howell will examine different approaches to postcolonial literatures and cultures of the French-speaking world.

Howell’s research and teaching explore contemporary French and Francophone literatures, as well as Francophone literatures of the African diaspora. She also studies The Beur Novel and Bande Dessinée as well as the concept of memory and history in postcolonial literatures.

She holds degrees in French and biology from the Ohio University, a D.E.A. in English from Université Rennes 2 and a Ph.D. in French and Francophone world studies from the University of Iowa.
