How to Find Fellowships, Grants, Internships with Pivot, Sept. 10 and 11

Ohio University faculty, students and staff can find fellowship, grant and internship opportunities through the university’s subscription to the Pivot system. The database can be searched by academic discipline, academic level, nationality and other filters.

The Office of the Vice President for Research and Creative Activity will offer two workshops on how to use the system in September. The first session will be held from noon to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 10, and a repeat session will be held from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 11. Both workshops will be located in 102 Research and Technology Center (RTEC).

Javad Anjum, a doctoral student in the communication sciences and disorders program, has used the system to secure $13,000 total in awards since his training session in 2011.

When the graduate student first searched for funding opportunities, he found that many were seeking applicants with strong leadership skills. He completed Ohio University’s 21st Century Leadership Series certificate, which strengthened his eligibility for several award programs, he said.

The Pivot system also helped him find niche award opportunities, such as the Taraknath Das Foundation Grant-in Aid Scholarship Award offered by Columbia University. The award is for Indian graduate students who have completed the first two years of their academic programs, and Anjum fit the description when he found the announcement in 2011. He applied for the program and received $4,500.

“I’d like to see more graduate students seek out this funding with confidence—you can get these awards,” he said.

More details on how to use Pivot, including a short video, are available online: http://www.ohio.edu/fellowships/searchfunding.cfm.

The 30-minute September workshops are open to graduate and undergraduate students, postdoctoral fellows, staff and faculty members of Ohio University. No RSVP is required.
