Research Funding and Workshops Available for Faculty, Staff and Students

The Office of the Vice President for Research and Creativity Activity offers several internal awards programs throughout the 2014-15 year to support the research, scholarship and creative activity of faculty, staff and students at Ohio University.

Several workshops will be held Sept. 9 to Nov. 20 this semester to help prospective applicants with the process.

Programs for Faculty and Staff Applicants

Ohio University Research Committee (OURC)

Competitive awards of up to $8,000 provide seed money for faculty and staff to pursue new research and creative activity projects. Priority is for new faculty and staff or established faculty pursuing projects that are a clear departure from previous research foci.

Deadlines: Thursday, Oct. 2, at 4 p.m. and Thursday, Jan. 29, at 4 p.m.

Workshops: Tuesday, Sept. 9, from 3-4 p.m. and Wednesday, Sept. 10, from 10-11 a.m. at 301U Alden Library; light refreshments provided. Additional workshops are Thursday, Nov. 13, 2-3 p.m. and Friday, Nov. 14, from 10-11 a.m. at  301U Alden Library.

Baker Fund Awards Committee

Competitive awards of up to $12,000 to faculty and staff support research, scholarship and creative activity. The committee seeks to support projects that are near completion and hopefully can be brought to full completion with the assistance of an award.

Deadlines: Thursday, Oct. 9, at 4 p.m. and Thursday, Feb. 12, at 4 p.m.

Workshops: Tuesday, Sept. 9, from 3-4 p.m. and Wednesday, Sept. 10, from 10-11 a.m. at 301U Alden Library; light refreshments provided. Additional workshops are Thursday, Nov. 13, from 2-3 p.m. and Friday, Nov. 14, from 10-11 a.m. at 301U Alden Library; light refreshments provided.

Air Travel Support Program

Funds are available to support trips to the areas within a 1,000-mile radius (including Washington, DC, Chicago, New York and Atlanta) on the university’s King Air plane. Activities that are allowable under this program include meetings with sponsors or potential collaborators.

Konneker Fund for Learning and Discovery

This new fund supports innovative, high-impact initiatives designed to advance undergraduate learning and research and graduate education. Applicants may request $50,000 for two years or $100,000 overall. Faculty and staff are eligible to submit proposals; collaborative projects are strongly encouraged.

Deadlines: Preliminary Discussion on Monday, Oct. 27

Proposals: Monday, Nov. 17

Workshops: Tuesday, Sept. 23, from 1-2 p.m. and Wednesday, Sept. 24, from 9-10 a.m.  at 301U Alden Library; light refreshments provided. This workshop will cover both the 1804 Fund and Konneker Fund programs.

1804 Fund

The fund was established by the Ohio University Foundation to support the university’s core mission of maintaining, strengthening and enhancing a learning-centered community. The fund promotes collaboration among units. The fund focuses its support through two categories:

  • Undergraduate Learning – Curricular innovations, programs and activities that enhance the undergraduate educational experience.
  • Faculty Research and Graduate Studies – Research, scholarly activities and innovations in graduate education.

Deadlines: Preliminary Discussions: Monday, Feb. 16 (with Dean of University College or the Vice President for Research and Creative Activity)

Proposal: Monday, March 16

Workshops: Tuesday, Sept. 23, from 1-2 p.m. and Wednesday, Sept. 24, from 9-10 a.m. at 301U Alden Library; light refreshments provided. This workshop will cover both the 1804 Fund and Konneker Fund programs.

Student Enhancement Awards

Competitive awards to support undergraduate, graduate and medical student research, scholarship and creative activities. Awards of up to $6,000 support research and travel to attend a professional meeting to present results.

Deadline: Thursday, Jan. 22, at 4 p.m.

Workshops: Wednesday, Nov. 19, from noon-1 p.m. and Thursday, Nov. 20, from 4-5 p.m. at 301U Alden Library; light refreshments provided.

Undergraduate Conference Travel Fund

Small awards of up to $500 for travel assistance for undergraduate students presenting their work at conferences and other venues for presentation.

Graduate Student Senate Grant for Original Work

Competitive awards to graduate students to conduct original research, scholarship or creative work. Semester deadlines. Maximum award $750.

Deadlines: Saturday, Sept. 27, at 5 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 14, at 5 p.m.

Graduate Student Senate: Travel Program

Will support travel to present original work, as well as travel for professional development workshops and seminars. Proposal selected by lottery. Semester deadlines. Maximum award $500.

Student Expo 2015

Registration for the 2015 Student Expo begins in January. The event is Thursday, April 9, at the Convocation Center.
