“Do you ever look up at the stars and think about how small our planet is and how insignificant humans are in the big picture?” writes Dr. Kenneth Hicks, Professor of Physics and Astronomy, in an Oct. 27 Columbus Dispatch article.

Maybe you think differently from me, but I find myself feeling that the human race is especially insignificant when I see what goes on in Washington, D.C.

Earth continues in its path around the sun, as it has for billions of years, and doesn’t care about arguments between Democrats and Republicans.

As for things orbiting out in space, what happens to the inhabitants of the International Space Station when the government shuts down? Do they put up a “do not disturb” sign on the door until the government reopens? Or are they deemed essential to government operation while the rest of NASA shuts down?

Shutting down NASA as well as other nonessential government agencies seemed to accomplish little except giving those workers some paid time off. At least that’s how I see it.
