Athens Natives Return with College Town Film Festival, Oct. 2-5

Ohio Town Film Festival

Film and Media Professor Matthew Jordan Ph.D. and Film Producer Eric Zudak—both Athens High School graduates—return to Athens and Ohio University with their one-of-a-kind touring College Town Film Festival 2013. Opening Night on Thursday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. at the Athena Theater on Court Street.

Jordan’s father, Don, is Professor Emeritus of Asian History at Ohio University and Zudak’s late father, Lawrence, was a Professor of Economics prior to his retirement in 1983.

The College Town Film Festival is designed to bring together working professionals, students and academicians. The fast-growing festival, which is adding college campuses at a steady rate, has a simple mission: locate local professors to champion, examine and discuss new films in an academic setting. The festival opens with Zudak’s film Karaoke Man starring Brian Dietzen from NCIS. Jordan and Zudak will be joined onstage by writer Kevin Guzowski for a lively discussion after the film.

Several A&S faculty are moderators and panelists for films. Dr. Ryan Fogt, Assistant Professor of Geography, will introduce No Horizon, a documentary about scientists wintering over in Antarctica, and serve on the panel that follows. Dr. Thomas Vander Ven, Professor of Sociology, is introducing and serving on a panel for The Unusual Calling for Charlie Christmas. Faculty from Voinovich School, Scripps, Patton, and Fine Arts also are participating.

Festival Highlights for the Athens Tour Stop

Preston won an Emmy award Sept. 15 for her role on ABC’s The Good Wife. That’s What She Said will be followed by a closing night party at Jackie O’s featuring musical act Guiney and Grimes. Too Cold Out There Without You is a documentary film about Rev. Christopher Fike. When Fike was ordained in the Episcopal Church, he was a straight, married mother of two. Too Cold Out There Without You is a story that looks beyond the act of transitioning and instead focuses on the transformations that take place in Fike’s relationships and the church.  Fike and the film’s director, Amy Gattie, will be joined Ohio University LGBT Center representatives to discuss the making of the film and its powerful impact… which has reached well-beyond the LBGT community to become a guidepost for understanding and tolerance.

The tour also features Late Night Zombie Fest with the short film Revenant and the psychedelic Brazilian-made feature film Beyond The Grave.
