The Alpha Chi Sigma (AXΣ) chemistry fraternity will be giving chemistry demonstrations at the Ohio Valley Museum of Discovery in the Market on State from 11 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31, as part of the museum’s current exhibit Harry Potter’s World: Renaissance Science, Magic, and Medicine, a six-banner traveling exhibition created to explore the link between Harry Potter and the history of science using materials from the U.S. National Library of Medicine with funding from the National Institutes of Health.

“Representatives from our fraternity will be putting on a ‘potions’ display. This will include flame demonstrations, color-changing experiments and a few small other demonstrations that will be performed in-sync with a small chemistry lesson,” says Jenna Silverman, Master Alchemist with the Alpha Chi Sigma Gamma Nu Chapter.

“The demonstrations are among those that were presented at the Family Science Saturday event that is held at Clippinger Laboratories every spring,” she adds. “The flame demos are always a hit for the kids, and anytime we can provide entertainment coinciding with chemistry, we are extremely enthusiastic to do so. We are grateful to be a part of the traveling Harry Potter exhibit, as many of our brothers are fans. Outreach is a significant part of our fraternal mission.”

“We are so excited to be working again with members of the AXΣ fraternity, says Christie Truly, OVMoD board member and volunteer coordinator. “Last spring they helped us with Messy Science (the museum guests loved the dry ice bubbles), and Saturday they will be cooking up potions and other ‘spells’  for our Harry Potter exhibit.  It is very important to us to complement our exhibits with live programs that encourage exploration and reflection, and the chemistry students are integral to those goals!”

The museum is in the Market on State.  From the main entrance, turn left and it is in the fourth storefront on the left.

The Ohio Valley Museum of Discovery is for children and families to explore and discover the world in which we live. Through interactive exhibits and hands-on activities, the museum combine aspects of the sciences, arts and humanities to provide exciting, creative learning experiences for children of all ages (2-92!). The museum opened at the Market on State in 2011. Previous special exhibits have included Wild Weather , Puppet Palooza, Going Batty, Dino Day, Human Body Day and more.
