Math Alum Among Two Chillicothe Teachers Named Woodrow Wilson Ohio Teaching Fellows

The Chillicothe Gazette reported June 3 that alum Amy Rann ’01, who earned a Mathematics degree in the College of Arts & Sciences, is returning to Ohio University for master’s work as a Woodrow Wilson Ohio Teaching Fellow.

Two local educators were among 77 selected as Woodrow Wilson National Fellows.

Amy Rann, of Chillicothe, and Vanessa Sowards, of Waverly, received the honor during a recent event at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus.

The Woodrow Wilson Ohio Teaching Fellowship recruits accomplished career changers and outstanding recent college graduates in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine to teach these subjects in high-need Ohio schools. The 2013 Fellows are the third class of new teacher candidates to be prepared through the program since the fellowship was launched in Ohio in 2010.

Each Fellow will receive a $30,000 stipend to complete an intensive master’s-level teacher education program at one of seven participating Ohio universities. These institutions have redesigned teacher preparation to give teacher candidates a full year of preparation in local classrooms, as well as specific teaching approaches for the STEMM fields. After their preparation, Fellows commit to teach for at least three years in a high-need Ohio school, with ongoing support and mentoring.

Rann is a 2001 graduate of Ohio University with a degree in mathematics. She is a substitute teacher serving Ross County schools, has been a successful business owner and agent, a board member of the Ross County Junior Civic League and a volunteer cheerleading coach. She will complete her master’s-level work at Ohio University.

Sowards earned her undergraduate degree in plastics engineering technology from Shawnee State University. She has five years of experience as a substitute teacher and educational aide, has been a Girl Scout leader and former 4-H adviser, a member and former chapter secretary of the Society of Plastics Engineers, and has been a participant and organizer of local food drives. She also will complete her master’s-level work at Ohio University.
