Science Café presents Dr. Paul Patton discussing “Harvest the Past, Feed the Future: Reviving the Legacy of Ancient Appalachian Crops” on Wednesday, Oct. 18, at 5 p.m. at the Baker Center Front Room.
Patton is Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Food Studies and Director of OHIO Archaeological Field School.
Ever wonder what prehistoric people who lived in southeastern Ohio ate? Assume it was just corn or squash? Think again.

Patton his team of students conduct archeological digs in Appalachia Ohio and collect fragments of prehistoric crops grown thousands of years ago. Many would just assume that these plant remains are just weeds, but they have much more meaning. These fragments tell the story of agriculture in the region that predates maize or corn by thousands of years. Patton believes that understanding these ancient food systems, including how prehistoric populations cultivated and subsisted on these crops, could help solve some of the food insecurity issues we face in southeast Ohio. Many of these ancient crops evolved to adapt to our region, and reintroducing these plants could allow more sustainable and productive agricultural practices.
Sciencé Cafe events are held on Wednesdays at 5 p.m. in the Front Room at Baker University Center. They are free and open to students, faculty and staff. Science Café is a venue for students to share their interests informally during a conversation exchange in a friendly setting.
The Science Café is hosted by Dr. Sarah Wyatt, Professor of Environmental & Plant Biology and Vice President of the Ohio University Chapter of Sigma Xi, and Roxanne Malé-Brune, Director of Grant Development and Projects in the Office of the Vice President for Research and Creativity.
