Wealth and Poverty Week: Global Challenges

The Wealth & Poverty theme announces its Fall 2016 schedule of events, beginning with a Wealth & Poverty week on Global Challenges from Sept. 26-30.

Most of the events can be viewed live or following the event on A&S TV.

Friday, Sept. 2 – Wealth and Poverty open forum, noon-1 p.m. at Baker 230

Wealth & Poverty Week: Global Challenges

Welath and Poverty theme logoThe Global Challenges week brings together Ohio University students, faculty, staff, and community members who share an academic interest in the major global challenges of today and tomorrow.  This week-long event focuses on global hunger, climate change, health crises, and human disasters which can only be addressed through the pooling and sharing of knowledge across disciplines.

  • Monday, Sept. 26 – Steve Scanlan (Sociology) on “The Global Hunger Crisis:  Food Poverty and Its Complexities in a World of Plenty,” 4-5 p.m. at Alden 319. Watch on A&S TV.
  • Tuesday, Sept. 27 – Ryan Fogt (Geography) on “The Causes of Global Climate Change over the Last Century and Our Hope for the Future,” 10:30-11:30 a.m. at Alden 319. Watch on A&S TV.
  • Wednesday, Sept. 28 – Gillian Ice (Social Medicine) on “Current Issues in Global Health,” 5:30-6:30 p.m. at Alden 319
  • Thursday, Sept. 29 – Felipe Aros-Vera (Industrial and Systems Engineering), on “International Disaster Relief Logistics: Lessons from Fieldwork Research and the Role of Social Networks,” 9-10 a.m. at Alden 319. Watch on A&S TV.
  • Friday, Sept. 30 – Eliza Harper (Nursing) and Global Health Initiatives students on “Botswana Healthcare—Interprofessional Study Abroad Experience,” 3-4 p.m. at Alden 319 (co-sponsored with African Studies and Global Health Initiative). Watch on A&S TV.

Public Lecture and Research Talks

  • Thursday, Oct. 13 – Larry Bartels (Political Science at Vanderbilt University), “Unequal Democracy: The Political Economy of the New Gilded Age,” 1:30-3 p.m. at Walter Hall Rotunda. Watch on A&S TV.
  • Thursday, Oct. 13 – Larry Bartels (Political Science at Vanderbilt Univsity), “Political Inequality in Affluent Democracies,” 4:30-5:30 p.m. at Alden 319 (co-sponsored with International Development Studies and Political Science)
  • Thursday, Oct. 27 – Max Woodworth (Geography at Ohio State Univsity) on urban design and landscape in China’s frontier settings, 3-4:30 p.m. at Alden 319 (co-sponsored with Asian Studies)
