Anthropology Students Collaborate with Alum at Hollaback!

hollaback-logoThree Ohio University undergraduate Anthropology students—Hannah Vaughn, Haley Shaw, and Kelsey Burkin—are working on a collaborative project with the local non-profit organization Hollaback! Appalachian Ohio.

Hollaback! works in the community to create cultural change around beliefs, attitudes and behavior related to street harassment and the continuum of violence against women.

Throughout fall semester, these students have been aiding Ohio University alum Sarah Fick ’04 of Hollaback! to create and distribute of a survey on cultural perceptions of sexual assault and street harassment in the Athens County community. Fick earned a B.S. in Education at Ohio University.

Ohio University students, faulty, and staff are encouraged to contribute to the project by clicking on the Community Perceptions Survey Link.

The students have worked closely with the organization to ensure that the language of their survey is sensitive for survivors of sexual violence.

The survey responses will aid Hollaback! in the development of a new internal organizational needs assessment that updates the most recent assessment, which was completed in August 2011.

Once completed, this needs assessment will allow Hollaback! Appalachian Ohio to thoroughly understand how to approach completing their mission in the community.

In addition to collecting information through the digital survey, the student team also is collecting survey responses at the public libraries in Chauncey and The Plains, OH.

The collaboration is part of the service learning component of ANTH 3400: Applied Anthropology, taught by Dr. Haley Duschinski, Associate Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Center for Law, Justice & Culture.

Other ANTH 3400 service learning collaborators include Marion Correctional Institution, Athens County Historical Society and Museum, Food Matters, and the Tuol Sleng Museum.
