First Workshop – Resumes and Cover Letters

Kacey Schaum, Assistant Director of the Career & Leadership Development Center for the College of Arts & Sciences, discussed “Presenting the Perfect Resume and Cover Letter: Bragging Rights” on Oct. 16, giving students general tips on the development of professional documents, how-tos for personalizing application materials to fit their unique style, and ways to increase their understanding of the content that should (or should not) be included in a resume and cover letter.

A workshop on Keys to Networking Success: Who Are You and Why Should I Care? was held on Wednesday, Nov. 8. The workshops are part of the center’s Professional Leadership Certificate.

Olivia Loguidice ’21, majoring in Psychology and Sociology-Criminology, said she used the information from the Bragging Rights workshop to perfect her resume and cover letter, as well as using the Career Tools on the career center’s website.

“I would recommend this workshop because prior to attending, I had no knowledge on writing a resume or cover letter,” Loguidice said. “After attending, I felt confident in my ability to write both of them.”

For her, the most effective part of the workshop was learning how to write a cover letter.

“There were a lot of little technical things that I would have never thought of when writing a cover letter,” she explained.

The advantage for Sociology students with these workshops is the small group setting, which means more personalized attention. The content is the same as the regular certificate sessions, but the examples and discussion focus more on the participants’ areas of interest.
