Notable Alumni | Math Alum Comes Back to Talk about Careers in Insurance

Editor’s Note: The College of Arts & Sciences launches the Notable Alumni Awards, honoring 37 Notable Alumni in 2017 for broad accomplishments in their careers, a commitment to community service, and valuable contributions to Ohio University, the College of Arts & Sciences, and its students.

Jake Robertson ’13 Actuarial Science

Ohio University alum Jake Robertson, now an actuary with Erie Insurance, comes back to Athens regularly to talk to fellow Bobcats about careers in insurance and actuarial science.

Robertson is a 2013 graduate of the College of Arts & Sciences with a B.S. in Actuarial Science.

“Being selected as one of the inaugural notable alumni was an incredible honor,” Robertson said. “It was great to see firsthand the incredible accomplishments of the other attendees and their relentless commitment to give back to Ohio University. While I was thrilled to celebrate what we’ve done to further the College of Arts & Sciences, it’s even more inspiring and encouraging to realize the passion and commitment of these alumni to help in the future.”

During his time at OHIO, Robertson was an active member of Gamma Iota Sigma, where he served as secretary. He also was actively involved in tutoring for the Mathematics Department and passed the first three actuarial exams prior to graduation.

Upon graduation, Robertson interned with Nationwide Insurance in Columbus, Ohio, and subsequently spent the first two years of his career with Nationwide’s Non-Standard Auto Pricing division. In May 2015, he accepted a position with Erie Insurance’s Personal Pricing Department in Erie, Pa. Currently, he is working as an Associate Actuary in Erie’s Modeling and Data Analytics Department.

Robertson currently holds the FCAS designation from the Casualty Society of Actuaries, where he also serves as the CAS University Liaison to Ohio University. He recently passed his last actuarial exam to achieve the Fellowship designation from the CAS.

In his free time, he enjoys watching Cleveland sports (even the Browns!), spending time with his wife, and exercising.

Connections to Ohio University

Robertson is currently the CAS University Liaison to Ohio University. He has been involved with recruitment for Erie Insurance. Additionally, he has worked with the Mathematics Department and Gamma Iota Sigma on campus to further OHIO’s actuarial program.

He has also assisted the College of Arts & Sciences with networking events, including participating in the Career and Networking Panel during the college’s first Arts & Sciences Career and Networking Week.
