Ohio University’s Contemporary History Institute is unique in that it analyzes the contemporary period in world history (World War II to the present) from an interdisciplinary perspective. Founded by renowned Cold War historian John Lewis Gaddis in 1987, CHI links the perspectives of history, journalism, political science, and economics, awards academic scholarships for M.A. and Ph.D. students, and offers a Certificate of Contemporary History to graduate students who complete the required coursework. CHI also hosts a speaker series throughout the academic year and features the Baker Peace Conference every spring.  Recent Baker Peace Conference speakers have included Pulitzer Prize-winning Vietnam War historian Frederik Logevall, historian of the Middle East Rashid Khalidi, and Russia/Eastern European editor for The Economist Arkady Ostrovsky.

Dr. Ingo Trauschweizer, CHI director, invites all who are interested to visit the Institute’s new Facebook page. It features upcoming speakers, alumni profiles, and frequently links to other events on campus that might be of interest to students and faculty. Upcoming CHI speakers include Stephen Porter (on humanitarianism and the perceptions of U.S. foreign policy overseas) on Oct. 19, Karen Greenberg (on the effects of the war on terror on civil liberties and national security) on Nov. 2, and Steven Miner (on the Soviet experience in World War II) on Dec. 7. The Baker Peace Conference, on March 22 and 23, will consider the relationship of populism and the media, a theme triggered by recent trends in the western world, but one that has deep roots going back for centuries.
