OPIE Pathway Program: Pawpaw Hike

Students in OPIE’s U.S. Pathway Program had a quintessentially Athens experience when they hiked into the forests surrounding The Ridges on a hunt for pawpaws. Accompanied by OPIE faculty and Dr. Kim Thompson from the Department of Environmental and Plant Biology, the students learned how to identify and collect pawpaws, walnuts, and buckeyes and also how to identify and avoid poison ivy. After the students collected as many pawpaws as they could carry, the group enjoyed a well-earned treat: pawpaw ice cream.
