The Wealth and Poverty theme is hosting a guest lecture by Diane Stock, a social worker in Athens County Children Services. She will talk about issues, challenges and needs of The Plains Elementary on Thursday, March 20, from 3:05 to 4 p.m. at Alden 318.

The Wealth and Poverty is launching, on March 20, a school supply drive to benefit students at this local elementary school.

Stock is a social worker with 28 years of practice in both urban and rural settings, focused in the areas of poverty, women and children. For the past 10 years, she has been employed by Athens County Children Services. She is currently on the School Outreach Team, where she has been doing trauma-informed, prevention programming for the last six years at The Plains Elementary. Stork lives in Meigs County on a 100-acre farm where she and her family grow most of their own food.

The Plains Elementary is one of four K-6 elementary schools in the Athens City School District. The attendance area serves the communities of The Plains, Athens, Chauncey, and Millfield. The total student population is 376, with 75 percent of the students considered economically disadvantaged, qualifying for free and reduced lunch and breakfast. The Plains Elementary staff embraces a trauma-informed approach to learning and enrichment of the whole student. Teachers, social workers, school counselors, and administration are trained in the Responsive Classroom model, which encourages social emotional learning and community building as the foundation for academic success. Many community partners are involved to provide services and support to our staff, students and their families.
