Anthropology Senior Explores the Artistic Elements of Culture at the Kennedy Museum

by Austin Rivers ‘17

Leah Dekold ’17 is interning at the Kennedy Museum of Art located at the Ridges. She is an Anthropology major in the College of Arts and Sciences at Ohio University and also working on a Museum Studies Certificate and found this position through Sally Delgado, the Curator of Education at the Kennedy Museum of Art who is also involved in the Museum Studies Certificate program.

The Kennedy Museum, a long-standing artistic stronghold of Athens has offered Dekold a number of insightful experiences that has fed her interest for anthropological studies.

Hands-on Experience

While interning at the museum Dekold is occupied with a variety tasks that range from guiding tours and setting up for special events, to working at monthly Art Encounters.

She says her most recent task at the Kennedy Museum is working to install an upcoming exhibit of Navajo Weavings.

Her work with the installation includes doing research on the weavings and going into collections to examine the pieces they are considering for display.

Museum projects such as this give Dekold a hands on experience in understanding the place of art in different cultures.

Favorite Part of Internship

Likewise, she says such experiences are her favorite part of the internship:

“I would have to say that my favorite part is how cross-disciplinary it is and how much I get to learn. We have worked with many talented individuals from various academic backgrounds, everything from the fine arts to mathematics!”

This internship is proving to be an incredible experience and Dekold enjoys every part of her job. In fact, she laments that the only downside of her internship is the limit on how many hours she is able to work.

Such an eagerness to aid the Kennedy Museum in its daily operations illustrates both Dekold’s hard work and the enjoyable opportunities present at the museum.
