More than 250 Arts & Sciences students participated throughout the college’s first-ever Career and Networking Week, held Jan. 30 through Feb. 3.

In the highlight event, more than 130 students met with alumni during the Alumni and Student Networking Reception in a supportive space to practice the art of networking. Students received business cards and networking tips and connected with alumni from humanities, social sciences and natural sciences who came from near and far to network with students as well as other alumni. More than 50 Arts & Sciences alumni generously offered their time to participate in college-wide and department alumni panels and/or the alumni-student networking reception. And dozens of participants got professional photos taken for LinkedIn.

“I wanted to thank Arts & Sciences for putting together such an amazing Bobcat Networking Alumni night,” said Danielle Easton ’17. “I met a lot of admirable people whose shoes I hope to be in one day. Alumni and staff encouragement helped me get out of my shell and network with alumni who were very valuable to my profession. They will also be a great addition to my network. Overall the event was amazing, and I am sure that these contacts will help me advance my career. Hopefully in the next couple of years I will be invited back as a successful alumna.” Easton, a student senator, is majoring in Political Science Pre-Law and Sociology-Criminology and pursuing a Law, Justice and Culture Certificate.

Highlights of the Career and Networking Week included:

  • A conversation with Dean Robert Frank and Imants Jaunarajs, Assistant Dean of Students for the Career and Leadership Development Center, where students learned more about “Maximizing Your Arts and Sciences Degree.”
  • Students also learned how to leverage LinkedIn to connect with fellow Bobcats, companies and industry information.
  • In other sessions, students learned about salary negotiations and signing up for Bobcat CareerLink.
  • Some recent graduates signed up for individualized career coaching with Kacey Schaum, a service that is offered to alumni year-round.

“For those of you who helped make this an enriching experience for students, we can’t thank you enough,” says Lisa Cohen, the college’s director of External Relations. “For those who wanted to come but could not make it work, we plan to do this again next year. If you are interested in learning more, please contact me and join others in supporting A&S students in the future.”
