The Anthropology program invites all students to sign up for the following two cultural anthropology courses offered in Spring 2017.

ANTH 3010/5010: Visual Anthropology
MW 4:35-5:55 p.m.
This course applies anthropological perspectives to the study—and making—of visual media.
Considering relationships between image, culture, and power, students will produce original creative work (a photo essay or short video) that explores a sociological topic or problem of their choice.
Projects for this class must have a clearly defined visual approach. That means (a) using images for more than illustration, and (b) thinking carefully and critically about the ethics and politics of “doing” visual anthropology!
The pre-requisite for the undergraduate course is ANTH 1010.
ANTH 4560/5560: Ethnographic Methodology and Field Research
TTh 3:05-4:25
This course offers training in qualitative methods, including participant observation; field notes; interviewing and audio recording; photography and film; and oral and life histories.
The class is ideal for students considering departmental honors research or nationally competitive awards such as Fulbright or Boren.
Both courses are taught by Dr Matthew Rosen. Rosen received his Ph.D. in Anthropology from the New School for Social Research in 2014. He is a cultural anthropologist focusing on visual anthropology and media studies with extensive field research experience in urban India.
