Dr. Linda J. Rice, Professor of English and Director of the Master of Arts in English Online for High School Teachers, presented at the Lilly National Conference in Traverse City, MI, in October.

The conference covers areas such as: community is cornerstone to improved student learning; participants are life-long learners; and scholarly, evidenced-based teaching is necessary to improve student learning.

Rice presented on “Ease for Students and Freedom for Faculty: Developing a Common Course Template for Online Programs.”

Description: This presentation will explain the integral nature of the common course template in the overall development of new online programs. With revenue crunches at the university, new emphases on dual enrollment, and an ongoing interest in expanding online course offerings to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse student body, faculty at our institution knew we needed to—and wanted to—further our development of online courses. What started with an Online Master of Social Sciences then went to an Online Master of Arts in English and now has reached online program proposals in Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Psychology, and a variety of themes-based and interdisciplinary initiatives. The common core course template—which can be different from program to program, but must be the same within each program—has been integral in helping faculty know how to get started in the online teaching environment. As part of talking through key considerations for developing a common course template, participants will also brainstorm with the help of a structured handout, what they would need to consider in creating a common course template for their own courses and departments.

This presentation will also provide a broad overview of what is entailed in moving through the process of proposing, developing and launching an online version of an existing program.
