Abstract:   Methane hydrates are a ‘frozen’ form of H2O and methane that form within marine sediments continental slopes worldwide. Dissociating gas hydrate could cause submarine geohazards such as landslides, or affect drilling and petroleum production. The dissociation or formation of gas hydrate may accelerate or mitigate climate change. Furthermore, gas hydrate could be a future, commercial source of natural gas.  In my talk, I will explore the dimension and features of hydrate systems and the marine sedimentary environment that they inhabit, using geophysical well logs, seismic data, sediment cores and mathematical models to puzzle out the complex subseafloor system.
