“My work as an archaeologist is ideal for me, I enjoy working outside in the field as much as being in the lab analyzing artifacts and my position allows me to do both,” she says.

Working as an Archaeologist

Spertzel Black worked as a Review and Compliance Archaeologist for the West Virginia State Historic Preservation Office for a period of time, then as an Archaeologist for Monongahela National Forest where she served as Crew Chief for three years.

She has been working as an Archaeologist with Heberling Associates, Inc. for the past eight years. Heberling Associates, Inc., is a cultural resource management firm located in Alexandria, PA. As the Field Director for archaeological projects, she coordinates and oversee all field excavations.

She has completed both small and large archaeological surveys and data recoveries in connection with federally-funded highway projects throughout Pennsylvania. In addition to her field work, she also serves as the Laboratory Director, responsible for processing, curation, and analysis of artifacts from field projects.

Spertzel Black will speak at the Department of Sociology & Anthropology OHIO Archaeology Field School Alumni Panel on Oct. 14.
