Alum’s ‘Noble’ Cause: Helping New Students Transition to Athens

As the leaves begin to change and thousands of students flood into Athens to prepare for another semester, one student’s transition to Athens has been made a bit easier. This is all in thanks to Ohio University alum Jerry Noble ’82Ph.D., who is helping to promote diversity and assist in the relocation of incoming Clinical Psychology students in a big way.

Noble, who earned a doctorate in clinical psychology from OHIO, has established the Kenneth A. Holroyd Student Relocation Fund. The purpose of this fund is two-fold: to honor the important role that Distinguished Professor Emeritus Holroyd played in Noble’s graduate school experience, and to give one student a one-time stipend supplement of $1,000 to help aid in his or her transition to graduate school and Athens.

“Many graduate alumni remember the challenges and expense of relocating to Athens, often from hundreds of miles away,” Noble said. Indeed, this transition can be costly and difficult and may discourage highly qualified and diverse applicants from choosing to attend Ohio University.

Noble implored that other alumni do their part in helping welcome such students, indicating that “donations to the Kenneth A. Holroyd Student Relocation Fund are a great way to help recruit top candidates for graduate study.” In recruiting such students, Ohio University’s Clinical Psychology program can continue to flourish and grow.
