Political Science Alum Tells Marshall Graduates to ‘Be Happy with Yourself’

Ohio University alum and West Virginia Supreme Court Chief Justice Menis Ketchum ’64 had a simple message for graduates at Marshall University’s Commencement, reports the Herald Dispatch in a story on “Graduates encouraged to follow their passion.”

“Find your passion and be happy with yourself,” he said. “The person that you will spend the most time with in the rest of your life is you and if you’re not happy with yourself you’re going to be spending all of your time with someone you don’t like.”

Ketchum told the graduates that no matter where their life leads them, it’s important to stick to their values and not allow themselves to be swayed by what others want.

“Choose the path that you want to follow,” he said “Don’t go around living someone else’s life. When you’re an old man like me, if you’ll choose the path that you want to follow and you’re happy with yourself, you’ll say it’s been a pretty good ride.”
