The Struggle for Farmworker Justice: the Wendy’s Campaign in Ohio | Feb. 23

Several Ohio University themes present “The Struggle for Farmworker Justice: the Wendy’s Campaign in Ohio” on Feb. 23, at 5:30 p.m. in Morton Hall 237.

In addition to the public presentation, members of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) will visit classes and meet with student organizations at Ohio University.

The CIW visit is co-sponsored by the Food Studies theme, the Center for Law, Justice and Culture, and the Wealth and Poverty theme.

The CIW is a worker-based human rights organization internationally recognized for its achievements in the fields of social responsibility, human trafficking, and gender-based violence at work.

This visit to OHIO is a part of CIW’s Ohio Fair Food Workers’ Voice Tour, which will culminate with a protest march on the fast food chain Wendy’s corporate headquarters in Columbus on March 6 at 12:30 p.m.

The CIW, having begun in the tomato fields of Immokolee, FL, is confronting abuses that farm workers endure nationwide. Its Fair Food Workers’ Voice Tour aims to enlist both workers and fast food retail operations in a campaign for farmworker justice.

The abusive treatment of farmworkers is the focus of the documentary Food Chains, which gives an in-depth look at the tomato fields of Immokalee. The CIW, having successfully persuaded Subway, Whole Foods and Walmart to join its cause, is in Ohio to focus attention on Wendy’s.
