Geography Gets a Drone for GIS Program

The Geography Department is now the proud owner of a drone—a DJI Phantom 3 Advanced Quadcopter with 2.7K Go-Pro Camera and 3-Axis Gimbal.

The camera will be a great resource for classroom applications, as well as faculty and student research projects. Dr. Jim Lein is starting things off with a “drone seminar” in the spring.

IT specialist Tim Grubb was invaluable with the new purchase.

“For me, the most interesting feature of the Phantom 3 is the ability to live stream the on-board camera to a tablet mounted right on the controller,” Grubb says. “Seeing what the camera is doing in real time and being able to make adjustments on the fly reduces trial-and-error and allows us to do more with each 20-minute flight.”
