Alum Puts GIS Degree to Work at Civil Engineering Firm

Within a month of graduating in December 2014, Ohio University alum Chris Haskins ’14 (B.S. Geographic Information Science) had accepted a position as a GIS Technician with Anderson, Eckstein and Westrick Inc., a civil engineering firm based in Shelby Township, MI (Metro Detroit area).

“The job search was short and sweet but very rewarding getting to know connections and potential employers,” he says. “It was pretty crazy finding a position so quick out of college, which I am extremely lucky to have accomplished. I’m very grateful for this opportunity to pursue GIS as a career!

“I’m enjoying getting to know the Detroit area better and transitioning from the student life to the real world. In this position, I’ve enhanced my prior GIS skills learned at OU and work with engineers, surveyors and architects. Our company provides a wide variety of services for our clients, which mainly make up municipalities in and around the Detroit Metro area.

“I think the best part of having GIS as a career is that I learn something new every day. It’s a unique field that our company is beginning to realize its full potential as a vital technology. I can’t thank the professors, TAs and other students for all their help along the way. Being a new hire right out of OU, I’m always open to give advice to those searching for jobs within the GIS industry. There are a ton of different avenues that students can go down to find the perfect position for themselves.”
