For undergraduate students, the idea of research—both scientific and creative—can be a bit daunting, but the Ohio University Research Division is here to help.

Roxanne Malé-Brune, director of grant development and projects, is hosting a “How to Find and Apply for Summer Internships Workshop” on Dec. 1.

Malé-Brune said the workshop is designed to teach students how to find internships or fellowships to support their research or creative activity and make connections with professors on campus who are actively conducting research in their field of interest.

According to Malé-Brune, research is a great way for college students to build tangible skills and explore their passions.

“The college experience is about recognizing what you’re good at, but also exploring what you’re passionate about, and becoming good at what you’re passionate about,” Malé-Brune said. “That’s what research internships are all about: test driving something. Trying something because you have an interest in it.”

Ohio University undergrads have completed research as diverse as archeological digs, scoring music for Hollywood movies and even simulating the effects of the microgravity on astronauts, Malé-Brune said.

“We had a group of students go up on the ‘Vomit Comet,’ the parabolic plane that goes up and down and simulates microgravity, and studied the cognitive functions of astronauts,” she said.

The Research Division will hold two sessions of the workshop on Tuesday, Dec. 1. The first will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in Baker 239, and the second (repeat session) will be from 6 to 7 p.m. in Clippinger 332. Pizza will be provided.

RSVPs for the event are requested to ensure there is enough pizza: male-bru@ohio.edu.

“Some of our students have found amazing opportunities,” Malé-Brune added. “If you can dream it, we will try to help you achieve it.”
