The Condensed Matter & Surface Sciences Colloquium Series presents Petra Stumm of Advanced Micro Devices on “Microelectronic Product Development,” on Thursday, Nov. 12, at 4:10 p.m. in Walter 245.

Abstract: What are your career plans after college? Do you have a good understanding what your work day will look like on a daily basis?                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  This talk will provide insight into the job responsibilities of a physicist working in the microelectronics industry on new product introduction (NPI) of integrated circuits. Specifically, the development cycle of game-console, notebook and desktop CPU and GPU chips that are powering HP/DELL/Lenovo computers, the Microsoft XBOX and the Sony PS4 will be discussed. The main steps of the IC fabrication process will be covered, as well as the approximately one year process of product characterization, validation and qualification performed prior to releasing the product to customers. Further, the product management formalism that enables the right products to be delivered on time, within the planned development budget and while staying below the expected manufacturing product cost target, will also be touched upon.
