Summer Courses | Parks, Requisites and the Environment

Art Trese is Parks and Requisites

Students interested in the environment can have it all this summer. Enjoy Athens and its parks, and fill some Tier 2 or college requisites.

Environmental and Plant Biology is offering the following summer classes:

PBIO 1030: Plants and People: This popular course that satisfies Ohio University Tier 2 Applied Science requirement, is all about plants and how they impact our lives, our cultural practices, economics, history and literature.

PBIO 1090: Americans and Their Forests: This fun course satisfies the Tier 2 Natural Science requirement with a look at the history, ecology and conservation of American forests, even featuring Paul Bunyon, Teddy Roosevelt, Smokey the Bear and Native Americans, not to mention oaks, pines, birch and Sequoia.

PBIO 2200: Woody Plants: This field course is great for non-science majors who want to explore local forested ecosystems while learning how to identify plants by leaves, bark, buds and more. Also learn how to use woody plants as bio-indicators to assess site quality and land use history.

PBIO 2250: Flowers: This course (not intended for PBIO majors) takes students on weekly field trips to locations such as Strouds Run State Park, Lake Hope State Park, Desonier State Nature Preserve, and Hocking Hills State Park.

PBIO 3030: Medicinal Plants of Ohio: This fun summer workshop class, with six days of field trips, lets students get outside and learn to identify a variety of medicinal, edible, and poisonous plants in the forests, fields and gardens of southeastern Ohio.

PBIO 3020: Soil Microbial Analysis Lab: Also offered for graduate students, this course is a one-week long intensive laboratory experience in soil science, biogeochemistry, and microbial ecology.

BIOL 1010: Principles of Biology: This lecture-lab course fills the Tier 2 Natural Sciences requirement. Students learn how living things operate and discuss environmental issues.
